How much is it (lion)?
$20 FD. And it's actually Mountain Lion. Lion is the (now) old OS.
Tom macwave:... collector of iPhone cases. Or so it seems.)
If we download it to the iMac can we use the same copy for my MacBook pro?
they USED to sell it per machine but I believe I read that one copy is good for all your home machines now
Yes. Supposedly you can use the same one on all your Macs. As long as they're one of the following models:
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
But, but, but. Before you run it on your iMac or MacBook Pro, copy the Installer (in your Applications folder called "Install OS X Mountain Lion") to a USB stick or an external hard drive. If you run the installer on any of your Macs, after it installs it will delete the installer app. So, unless you copied it before you do the install, you won't have it around anymore afteward.
Tom macwave:... running a CCC backup as we speak.)
From the license agreement:
Tom macwave:... still running CCC... time passes...)
It's not expensive, but is it worth the upgrade?
Odd. ABC News asked the same question. They seemed to think so. So do I. And so do you.
Can you say "dictation on your Mac"?
Tom macwave:... and yes, CCC is still running!)
Still waiting for the upgrade code from Apple. Been 24 hours so far and still no response. Indications are that some users have to wait 72 hours for the code to arrive (sob sob). I know it's only £13 to buy but I'm getting it free so shouldn't grumble really.

Well, I am now officially Mountain Lioned.
Still getting familiar with it but there's some things that I think I'm gonna like. I like notifications so far even though it's gonna kill Growl. The new Safari seems pretty nice also although I think the integrated address/search bar is going to take some getting used to.
Tom macwave:... continuing to explore...)
I'm really liking it so far
icloud integration is working well, the whole thing seems much faster to me (but perhaps that's just the "newness")
Having played with windows 8, I can see a lot more people moving away from windows when that comes out. I think Apple have done a much better job of moving towards tablet/phone integration without making the desktop OS suck.
I am mountain lioned as well and think the old iMac seems to be running faster than before
My boys are already texting me at work from the screen
Apple dictation cannot understand me at all and I have a very middle english accent
So far so impressed
Definitely seems "snappier".
Did you happen to see this article?
Tom macwave:... death by Windows 8!)
I love imessage being available on the desktop as well as ipad/iphone etc. It's a killer feature for me!
I never really understand why other messaging apps like whatsapp dont have desktop versions
I'm a little ambivalent now about the dictation. I don't know about the privacy aspects of it.
Not totally convinced that I want everything I dictate and all my contact information being sent to Apple.
Even though it can understand me perfectly!
Tom macwave:... getting sensitive about privacy in his older age...)
So far its the best bit for me for sure , that and the iCloud - Haven't tried mirroring to the apple TV yet but I can see taht being useful as well
doesnt understand me at all but that's fine and not all that unexpected. I'm a geek and too used to not talking to people for months on end
however, why it has to send to Apple I don't know :/ I can kinda understand it on a cell phone, more processing capacity needed and so on but does it really need more processing power than my i7 imac? Really? :/
edited to add:
I played with an android phone the other day with jellybean installed. I was talking to it normal tone, normal speed and it was understanding 95% of what was said. Not that it ALWAYS replied perfectly, but it was easily good enough to ask questions, dictate etc. Apple need to be careful on this fight...
I'm too scared to update!! My macbook only has a dual core processor and 2gb of ram. It's not too slow on lion, but I'm still worried!
i'm whizzing even fast round t'internet! i like the notes and reminders and messaging!
