We've used taxis every time we've been and indeed we spent more on cabs than anything else out there.
I guess the things I've learnt are:-
The cabs at disney will all be yellow cabs run by mears. They have meters and should all be reasonably respectable and safe. They will, however, go different ways and costs will therefore be different.
Cab drivers in orlando either dont know, or are lying about not knowing, how to get to many places. Like we've said a place in downtown orlando or winter garden village and they just don't know. They will drive off anyway and try and call someone on the way. This often results in lengthy journeys and arguments over cost :/ try to ensure that the driver knows the way before you start!
If you're out at a mall or somewhere, you will see many cabs stop and ask you if you want to go somewhere. Be careful. They often dont have meters so you're at their mercy as to how much they want to try and charge you!
Towncar companies can be more reliable in terms of arranging to meet you and pick you up after. They will also pre-agree the cost with you and they're not THAT much more than cabs! HOWEVER watch out for extras like enforced gratuities. Things like if you're being picked up from international terminals at orlando airport you HAVE to pay 20% gratuity and so on. Not only will they want this 20% but the drivers often hope for more in their hand as well. A gratuity should be at your discretion so this enforced policy is not good in my personal opinion.
All in all, take care, don't risk your safety or your money on them if youre not sure just wave them on and call a mears cab
