what are best western motels like? generally i mean, honest answers please . We like the hampton chain for travelling in the US -never had a bad experience but this motel chain is the only one in the viscinity of the place we want to stay for a few nights. Staying in a hampton would mean 20 mins travelling.

    thanks

Ive stayed at many best westerns...I personally like them..I prefer them over any other "motel"...yes they are a chain and they do have standards but quite a few of them are owned by Mom and Pop's..I think it gives them more of a family feel...weird explanation I know

I've only ever stayed in one, and that was years ago, and it wasn't bad. I stay in the Hilton chains myself, Brit so am familiar with Hampton Inns and Suites.

20 minutes isn't so far though, ya' know?

While on our road trip, we stayed at a Hampton Inn, Studio 6 (never again), Best Western and, Radisson.
Best Western was my fave by far. It was clean and the staff were friendly. It was half the price of hampton Inn,.

Best Western is a co-op and the owners/properties are members. They pay a pretty hefty fee for that privilege. So you will find most adhere to at least the minimum standards required and frequently exceed them. Occasionally, you'll find one that doesn't and hasn't been inspected recently.

Typically, you can expect neat and clean, but nothing fancy. Some go beyond that, but you reasonably can expect the minimum.

I've stayed in Best Western's before. Quality depends on the area you are in. They've all been clean and certainly acceptable.

The only hotel chain that I adamantly refuse to stay in is Days Inn. Nasty in every one I have been in. Yuck.

I have found that the lower budget chains tend to much nicer in the country than in the bigger cities. We stayed in a really nice Super 8 in WV. Go figure.

I prefer either Holiday Inn or Hilton owned hotels but stay in Best Western if I can't find either at a reasonable price. BW has improved greatly over the last several years.
