Executives from both Disney and Lightstorm Entertainment kick off the largest expansion in AK history with a ceremonial groundbreaking for the park’s new Avatar-inspired land.

Designed by Disney in partnership with Avatar creator James Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment, this new land is hailed to be unlike anything ever experienced at a Disney park. Guests will experience the wonders of Pandora when they fly with banshees and explore a rich natural environment with mountains that float and interactive plants that glow at night.

Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, says, “With AVATAR, we are adding a spectacular new world and an exciting set of attractions unlike any our guests have experienced. The expansion now under way will make the park a true full-day, must-see experience.â€￾

This week’s groundbreaking is just the first step in a larger expansion for the park that will also include the debut of a new evening spectacular, as well as a nighttime version of Kilimanjaro Safaris.

    So here's the thing...

I have never seen the movie. I didn't find it interesting when it was released, and I haven't been moved by all the "glowing reviews" to see it since.

In fact, I've actually sort of ignored the whole concept. Until I read this. And to be honest, now I'm kinda excited about floating mountains and glowing plants and being able to stay in AK past dark. But, I'm not excited because it's Avatar-based, I'm excited because floating mountains and glowing plants are just plain cool. I don't have the "avatar-anger" to bias me...I'm just excited about something new...hopefully I'll stay that way.

Also, a safari at night...and a new SPECTACULAR...now that piques my interest!

I'm really happy about the construction, I have seen the film, a long time after all the hype though and I really enjoyed it.

I think there are so many different things they can do and I'm looking forward to seeing it grow.

And who knows, it may be awful. But I've always thought that Animal Kingdom is woefully underutilized, and since the first time we did the (ermm...I forget the official name for it...oh wait...) Grand Gathering at AK, where we saw a bit of the bird show, did the safari at dusk, had a lovely dinner at Tusker House and then slowly strolled out of AK as the sun was setting...I have been HOPING they'd do something that would allow this park to be open a bit later. I understand the constraints due to the animals, and I would never want to interfere with their well-being, but it is truly a lovely park at dusk/sunset.

I have never watched Avatar, don't want to watch Avatar and probably will never watch Avatar. I don't care how amazing the graphics are. The small portion I watched of the beginning made me think of The Matrix (which I fully cannot wrap my brain around and hate).

That sad, I may very well enjoy the new land. Who knows? I just wish they had gone with the Beastly Kingdom plan

please PLEASE *PLEASE* don't mention the abysmal avatar in the same sentence as Matrix which is a classic philosophical scifi movie (although sadly the followups were dire). Trust me, Avatar was nothing compared to Matrix.

The CM doing the Magic Kingdom tour was going on about how excited she was about avatar-land and how well the themeing would fit in. I kinda got it but at the same time I just don't see that there's enough good in the movie to sustain it.
