ANAHEIM, Calif., June 3, 2011– The grand opening of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure at Disney California Adventure park marks a key development in the multiyear expansion at Disneyland Resort. Based on Disney’s classic animated movie “The Little Mermaid,” this ride-through attraction opens June 3, followed by the July 1 opening of Goofy’s School Sky and two newly themed restaurants.

With the new additions, the transformation of the Paradise Pier area of Disney California Adventure will be complete. The entire boardwalk surrounding Paradise Bay becomes reminiscent of an early 1900s seaside amusement park and includes some of the Resort’s most popular attractions including the award-winning “World of Color,” last year’s break-out entertainment spectacular. The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure fits ideally with the boardwalk theme.

“The openings of these fantastic attractions mark another milestone in our Disney California Adventure expansion and reinforce our commitment to evolving Disneyland Resort into a world-class, multiday destination,” said Disneyland Resort President George A. Kalogridis. “Our continued investment in the Resort, from our hotels and restaurants to attractions and entertainment, creates incredible new experiences for our guests and helps ensure that the Anaheim/Orange County area remains a top tourism destination.”

With the opening of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, one of several attractions that have debuted the past few years in Disney California Adventure, Walt Disney Imagineers head into the home stretch of the five-year project that started with Toy Story Mania! in 2008.

Goofy will join Ariel in making a new home along Paradise Bay. Goofy’s Sky School, a coaster attraction with family thrills, adds to the fun on the boardwalk. Guests will thrill to twists, turns and spins as they get a flight lesson from their zany instructor, Goofy.

Completing Paradise Pier are newly themed, quick-serve restaurants, Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta and Paradise Garden Grill. Also, guests will find fun treasures to take home at Seaside Souvenirs, a boardwalk mercantile that recalls the nautical-themed curio shops of seaside towns everywhere. Formerly known as Souvenir 66, many of the mementos here are themed to the nearby The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure attraction.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR DISNEY CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE PARK

The final stage of the expansion project will be highlighted by the 2012 opening of the eagerly anticipated 12-acre Cars Land, featuring the world of Radiator Springs and three new attractions: Luigi’s Flying Tires, Mater’s Junkyard Jamboree and the thrilling E-Ticket Radiator Springs Racers. Extensive landscaping, new shops and food locations will create a rich environment for the land.

Also premiering in 2012 will be the new Buena Vista Street and a completely redesigned entrance to Disney California Adventure. The newly themed entrance will bring more of Walt Disney into the park, celebrating the hope and optimism of California that attracted Walt to this land of opportunity in the 1920s. Guests entering the park will be instantly immersed in the world that inspired Walt during his early days as an animation pioneer.

The Carthay Circle Theatre, a re-creation of the great California movie palace where “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” premiered in 1937, anchors the newly designed plaza from which guests will set out to experience all the thrills, excitement and wonder of Disney California Adventure.

The Red Car Trolley, based on Los Angeles’ historic Pacific Electric Red Car Line, will transport guests from Buena Vista Street, down Hollywood Boulevard, to the footsteps of the famed Hollywood Tower Hotel, home to The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror.

    MULTI-DAY, WORLD-CLASS TOURIST DESTINATION

The expansion builds upon the transformation of Disneyland into a multi-day destination resort, a project that began in 2001 with the opening of Disney California Adventure, the Downtown Disney district and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.

Since then, the Disneyland Resort has continued to grow with the addition of popular attractions and shows such as Star Tours - The Adventures Continue, now in 3-D; Toy Story Mania!; Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage; Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror. In 2009, the resort completed a major expansion of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, which included the first West Coast destination for Disney Vacation Club. In addition, the signature Disneyland Hotel is undergoing a major refurbishment that will be completed in late 2011.
