Walt Disney World Resort today announced the multi-year transformation of Downtown Disney into Disney Springs, a unique destination that will treat guests to significantly more shopping, dining and entertainment amid beautiful open-air promenades, meandering springs and waterfront charm.

Disney Springs will feature an eclectic and contemporary mix from Disney and other noteworthy brands. From boutique shops to unique flagship anchor stores, guests will be able to explore a variety of shopping, dining and entertainment experiences and discover options unlike any other currently available in Central Florida.

“Disney Springs will be a timeless, vibrant place where Walt Disney World guests and local residents can relax, shop, dine and be entertained in an imaginative setting where they’ll instantly feel at home,” said Tom Staggs, chairman of Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “Featuring distinctive brands, world-class restaurants and unforgettable entertainment, Disney Springs will be brought to life with the same focus on storytelling and attention to detail that goes into our theme parks, resorts and cruise ships, resulting in a welcoming space that only Disney could create.”

Disney Springs will double the number of shops, restaurants and other venues for guests to explore, resulting in more than 150 establishments. In addition, Staggs noted, Central Florida stands to benefit from the expansion with more jobs, tax revenues and business opportunities.

Drawing inspiration from Florida’s waterfront towns and natural beauty, Disney Springs will include four outdoor neighborhoods interconnected by a flowing spring and vibrant lakefront. In addition to a new gateway with a signature water tower and grand entry, the destination will feature:

    • The Town Center, which offers a sophisticated mix of shopping and dining along with a promenade where guests can relax, refresh and reconnect.

    • A colorful and thriving commercial district called The Landing with inspired dining and beautiful waterfront views.

    • The family-friendly Marketplace that will continue to delight guests of all ages by combining new experiences, such as an over-the-water pedestrian causeway, along with classic Disney favorites, including an expanded World of Disney store.

    • A West Side that provides an exuberant atmosphere with lively entertainment, along with a series of new elevated spaces that provide both shade and an overlook to the activity below.

Collectively, these efforts will not only have an impact within Walt Disney World, but will also have an economic ripple effect on Central Florida. The project will create an estimated 1,200 construction jobs and nearly 4,000 operational roles.

Disney will share more details on specific experiences coming to Disney Springs in the future. Construction is slated to begin next month with new areas opening in phases. Disney Springs is expected to be complete in 2016.

It sure looks like the "bees knees" and it will be great when it is finished.
I dread to think what DTD will be like when the construction works are taking place though.

    It certainly sounds good. :)
I wonder if they will have to close parts of DTD while they're building.

I think it will be chaotic at DTD, rumour has it that they are going to be building a multi story carpark in the Marketplace car park. Can you imagine what it will be like for parking  I will find a way to get to the Earl of Sandwich though

I think it will be worth it when it's finished.

It certainly looks nice. We don't frequent DTD each trip partially because it wasn't worth the trouble. It was getting a bit long in the tooth to be sure. I think any change will be an improvement.

I think it is true Brit, if they are making the area bigger then they will need more parking spaces, it will be a first for Disney though, a multi storey car park

I think it'll be great, it certainly does need to be up dated. On our last visit we only went the once as we felt we'd seen it all on that one trip.

They need to label their car parks too, to stop people losing their cars

I'm reading in other places that there will be a lot of new shops and bars/restaurants including an Apple Store, a Marvel Store and a Trader Sam Enchanted Tiki bar, similar to the one at Disneyland.

I hope it doesn't become just another mall

    it looks nice, but massive...

I wouldnt be against it being a mall actually.. it would make shopping easier for us, since we dont have a car and dont leave Disney.

Still, I dont look forward to walking through it if its THAT big

I so hope they pull this off. We were at DTD recently and it is a tired, worn place with not much to recommend it. Doing away with PI as it was seems to have been a costly error on Disney's part. I know that many, many people now skip DTD and just go to CityWalk.

I think a multi level parking garage will be a good thing. Better use of space and all that jazz. They could probably use a couple of them! They will need to keep them safe though. Parking garages can be a place for unsavory characters to hang out and cause trouble. I would hope it would be well lighted and at least an approximation of security.

It's well past time for WDW to do something new and innovative and INTERESTING with DTD.

We did nosey around Splitsville when last there. If you are a bowler or pool player you'll enjoy it. The use of space seemed odd to us. Not nearly as many lanes as you would think. Lots of place for dining and drinking...

I have my fingers crossed they put in a Jamba Juice like DTD in CA has

Can't believe I missed hearing about this.

Having done a little reading, I can say it's about time!

From what I have read Planet Hollywood will become an Observatory! While Cap'n Jack's Restaurant is to close alltogether!

I think it's exciting and hope that it's just more than shops as to be honest I don't go to Disney to shop in Malls and outlets bla bla bla! lol
