Well not me actually but Steven needs a phone. He starts a new school in September and that involves going on the train to the next town so he needs a phone for contact in case he misses the train home and things like that.

I'm thinking a monthly plan would be best but don't want to pay out loads for things he won't use. I don't want him to have the latest must have model of anything because even though he's going to a lovely school you never know who might be tempted to remove it from him.

I haven't got a clue where to start looking though. I still have my old (don't laugh) Blackberry Curve and it does all I need from a phone so see no reason to change it. I know an 11 year old boy won't want one of those old things though.

Something along these lines I guess but I don't know if this is a goodenoughforahighschoolboy phone.

    Help!

I can't believe it, a phone question I can't answer :( I have zero idea about what kids would find acceptable.

I can say that the one you list there is android, a good phone with tons of good reviews everywhere. Not as "nickable" as an iphone and very compatible with loads of apps free and otherwise. Very capable indeed, a really good smartphone.

The only thing about android is I'd always recommend some anti-malware protection because there are phone virii and generally nasty stuff out there for android phones.

A second hand iphone 4 bought outright from eBay may be the way forward.

As well as being far more safe & secure than an Android, FindFriends is a top app that's free and will allow you to track him wherever he is from another Apple device.

The 4 is far cheaper than a brand new 5s, retains it's value well (so you can sell it on afterwards on eBay) and has street cred to boot.

3 do a really good £12.50 a month plan that includes unlimited data and IMO is ideal for anyone (regardless of the phone) beginning their journey into mobile communication!

We used to be the same until I finally reneged a few years back.

How Google have managed to convince the world that Android deserves to be even mentioned in the same breath as iOS is now one of life's little mysteries to me! :)

when the boys started going to school many miles away we bought a very cheap tesco mobile PAYG phone that was easy to text on - looked like a blackberry but wasn't

the school asks for them to be signed in and out every day so in the end they stopped bothering as it was a hassle - still I liked the idea of being in touch with them - especially after Matthew got stranded at school by the snow that day

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAhaaaaaaaaaaa you're funny. I had an ipod touch for while. The tech support is pathetic. All I wanted was a password reset. Not too much to ask. Yeah right.

And the imacs at school. Well they lay unused in a corner now because they couldn't decided from day to day whether they would cooperate with the user or not.

And the whole having to pay extra money for an adaptor for everything. Pah!

    And battery life....

Tell them guys. No point talking to me about apple products.

    Nope, no way.

oh I so so so so SO want to argue, if iMacs aren't working, someone is really working hard to get them to that state, seriously :)

...but ok I know this would go downhill really quickly so I'll just :tape:

Did someone call me? ;) :D

I don't have much to add to the conversation as I don't know what phones are available there, but I do know if I were getting a phone for the boy, here it would be a simple trac phone, pay as you go with controls that only allowed outgoing calls to certain numbers, and texting would be controlled with regard to outgoing and incoming.

It's not the boy(s) I worry about, but the creeps out there who prey on them. :(
