iPhone OS 4.0 announced (available in summer)

Over 1500 new APIs coming in iPhone OS 4.0
Developers can now access the calendar and photo library.
A new framework called "accelerate" gives hardware accelerated math functions.
iPhone OS 4 will ship this summer (as expected).
    100 new features for users.
Users can create playlists, have a 5x digital zoom, tap to focus on video, gift apps to friends/family, geotagging, places in the photo app, change homescreen wallpaper (like with iPad), Bluetooth keyboard compatibility (also like iPad).

    7 major features
    1.MULTITASKING.
"We weren't the first to this party, but we're going to be the best. Just like cut and paste."
Apple has found a way that won't make the phone feel sluggish or reduce battery life.

Double click the home button to pull up a row of icons at the bottom of the screen showing running tasks. Jump between them easily

    2. Folders to arrange your apps.
    can make a folder
Folders are automatically named based on the category the apps come from.
Selecting a folder icon drops down multiple icons. Folders can be added to the taskbar too.
Dragging one app on top of another automatically makes a folder with the two apps in it.

Home screen wallpaper changeable on the iphone (like the ipad)
Like the iPad, you can have two separate images for lock screen and home screen.

feature 7 - iAd (I'm not expecting to like this)

Building advertising right into iPhone OS 4. (yep already I dont like it)
This is a way for developers to make money off of their free apps.
"Most of this kind of advertising sucks," Jobs says of current mobile ads.
60% of revenue goes to the developer. (so 40% to apple for doing nothing, not a bad gig if you can get it!)

These features will be iPhone 3GS and iPod touch third-gen compatible.
iPhone 3G and second-gen iPod touch will get "many things," but not multitasking.

Features are coming to iPhone this summer.
iPad owners will have to wait until the fall.

Any change in position on Flash in iPhone OS 4? Nope.
iPad still set to launch internationally near the end of April.

I'm thinking now may be the time to put those 2 spare 3GS iphones on ebay

Far as I know it'll be free for iphones, I can't see them charging for it (especially because they'll want the iAds in as many phones as possible)

3g and below arent supported for some stuff because they say the hardware isnt fast enough.

None of its out until "summer"

Damn! Knew I'd have to upgrade to get some of this stuff :( I have a perfectly good iPhone here that does everything I want, I don't know if I can justify buying a new one just so that it can do something I've not *needed* for the past 2 years I've had this phone
