Right so I thought i'd do a few calculations to see how much it would actually cost me. This is assuming that we buy before we next go which will probably be 2016 now.

Instead of spending £1500 on a villa or £2884 in a 1 bed at OKW with 'free dining' we would need 378 points to stay 12 nights in a 1 bed at AKL. Cleverly avoided 2nd weekend when we would go to US for a few nights. This would be an unusual rental as from then on i anticipate just Jon and I and a studio will be fine so 200 points to be purchased.

    so 200 points at $80 resale $16000 = £10666 based on exchange of 1.50
    annual dues 200 x $5,97 = $1197 £796 per year

so over 40 years- cost of lump sum = £266.65 per year and dues £796 = £88.55 per month for at least 12 nights per year :)

i know i've missed closing costs but they are minimal compared to the whole outlay.

    Any thoughts?

Brit, I just recently read an article that had an excellent example of a point cost breakdown. I'll try to find it at lunch and post the link.

Right after much thinking and a discussion with dh we've decided not to do it. I just don't want to be tied down - i want to be able to stay at the other resorts and don't want to pay out all that money to buy from Disney. if i want to stay at a DVC resort i can rent points quite easily. So- final decision made. If i win the lottery i'm going to buy a house at the marceline area of Golden Oaks :)

We should have done it when the kids were little but were too afraid because of the whole time share thing!

Sounds like you've definitely made the best decision for you and your family, Jules. Well thought out though...I'm still on the fence :)

Edited to add - our DVC point rental experience has gone smooth as ice so far!

Does anyone know if you can use points from non-Disney timeshares

I was told at the weekend that I am going to be given 2 timeshares, one for Thailand and one for Tenerife. I think there are 3 weeks in total.

We aren't sure if we will take them over yet, it will all depend on the annual costs, but I was just wondering :)

I didn't think they would, I don't really know much about it at the moment to be honest.

You can exchange your non-Disney timeshare to stay at Disney but you and your resort have to be a member with RCI.
