For gadget nuts, Google has released a beta of its brand new web browser called chrome
    http://www.google.com/chrome/

It's only for windows right now, mac soon

It's designed from the ground up to be fast, easy and uncluttered.

The longer term goal is to pull the web into supporting more clever "web apps" which google are trying to convert the world into using instead of desktop apps like ms office.

Heard a "spiel" about this on NPR this afternoon on my way home from work...thought to myself, "I'd like to give it a try, I'll have to google the download." and then I thought, "Bet Keith already has a link posted to it..."

    I love being right.

I like it!! Very nice interface, very modern, and simple. just what I like. Can't see it revolutionising the internet or anything but it's still pretty cool.

Thats exactly what it's supposed to do, you're just seeing the first step at the moment.

The idea is to make it a pioneer of web 3 where you dont need desktop apps, you use web based ones inside that browser BUT not only will they work from an online web page, but they'll work inside the browser even when not connected to the internet.

If google manage it with enough killer apps, the operating system whether its linux/macosx/windows will become irrelevent and soon you can expect a system where the OS is effectively just the google browser.

You're seeing the first step of something revolutionary.... of course, whether it'll work or not is a different matter

I can't imagine them to pull it off but it would be mega cool if they did.
I can see it working more for one of those ultra-portable laptops, like the aspireone, which has 3G and wireless, and also the asus models, rather than a full desktop or full laptop PC.

well again, it's part of a bigger picture. Online storage of documents so theyre automatically backed up and you dont lose them if theres a fire or something, applications "rented" rather than bought and always upgraded to the latest version. Apps available to you wherever you are, whatever youre using

Microsoft still make their money on the windows desktop, google/facebook/yahoo etc. make their money on the web. There's going to be a LOT of very rich and powerful companies pulling you away from your mac/windows OS to a platform agnostic web based system.
