Baleigh has just left with her best friend (and family) for her cruise and Jon and I have just set out on a week-long road trip to Upstate New York, Canada and Vermont, and I thought it might be fun to bring you along!

We're currently passing through Massachusetts, on our way to Niagara Falls for the night. We'll be staying at the Redwood Bed & Breakfast ( http://www.redwoodbedandbreakfast.ca/ ) just a few minutes walk from the Falls tonight.

I've never stayed in a proper B&B before. Though we stay in one in Vermont, we've always been in the Carriage House vs the main house so it's felt much more like a resort/villa. I'm very much looking forward to it!

Likewise, aside from our Vermont trips, this is one of the first trips we've taken outside of Disney. It's a very strange feeling packing up and leaving and not knowing what to expect!

    I'll keep you posted!

You are going right through where we used to live!! :mental: OOOOOOH and where Shellyamc still lives!!! :mental: :mental:

Too bad you didn't have us for tour guides. :unimpressed:

Ah well, you'll survive. Perhaps. I shall expect to see PHOTOSPHOTOSPHOTOS of every step of the way AND a full report on the hour. Ok. Daily.

Oh, and I'm not tellin' ya' where to eat, because I'm still mad atcha' for not inviting us. :unimpressed:

(But I will tell you that if you don't eat some poutine in Montréal, you'll be missing out on a FABULOUS regional delicacy). * sniff *

    Off to have a lookieloo!

Tink! Would have been soooooo excited to have the both of you as a tour guide, you'll just have to join us on our next trip! But I WILL seek out poutine!

Tom, thanks for cleaning up my linky mess ;-) (which btw, tried to autocorrect to "kinky" mess, oh my!)

You are going to love poutine!! Make sure you get the REAL stuff, none of that fake junk. The cheese has to be true curd, not fakey plastic cheddar. AND the gravy has to be deep dark brown.

You are in for a treat! :D

Absolutely beautiful staircase in our B&B. They don't build 'em like this anymore...the wainscoting is exquisite.

    Beautiful!

I have only been to Niagara Falls once. And it rained the whole time so I was less than impressed lol. Everyone always has such beautiful pictures so I'm going to have to take another trip

Would you believe they let me back in?? LOL. At the border we were asked if we had anything to declare, and I jokingly said, "I declare Canadian Ice Wines to be damn near perfect." The guard was not amused. It still beats what Jon WANTED to say when he was asked, "What were you doing in Canada?"

So, a few non-Disney travel observations:

    1) I will NEVER, EVER complain about Disney wi-fi again. We were either cursed (or blessed, depending on how you look at it) with HORRID, HORRID internet connection the ENTIRE trip. Being in Canada (which is subject to RIDICULOUS data charges by Verizon) and therefore not willing to use our iPhones, we found ourselves at the mercy of whatever local connection we could find - and CLEARLY Canada does NOT put the same emphasis on internet connectivity that America does.

    2) For me at least, there IS such a thing as too much of a good thing. Whether it is fine wine, fine food or the freedom to do whatever you want, there DID come a time when all I wanted was a dirty martini, a cheap hamburger and a ridiculous conversation with one of my children.

    3) Having now visited Canada, I don't find EPCOT's Canada Pavillion ridiculous. Let me explain. After having been subjected to the absolute joke I find the American Pavilion in EPCOT to be, I have always assumed that I would find the "real" Canada vastly different than the "virtual" Canada in EPCOT. In some ways it is quite different, but in many ways, Disney was pretty spot on! On our way home, Jon informed me that he'd been keeping count and that I'd "only" used the phrase, "That's just like EPCOT!" 18 times. :taunt:

    4) The odd cranky CM notwithstanding, Disney service and friendliness really can't be beat. While I already knew it was not the "industry standard", I was still often surprised to see such nastiness and disinterest among those in the business of caring for travelers. Make no mistake, we DID meet some LOVELY people (really lovely), but again, they were the exception, not the rule.

    5) The next time someone tells me Disney is too expensive, I'm going to laugh in their face (if they're lucky, that's all I'll do). Traveling is expensive. Period. Can you adjust for economics? Absolutely. Can you travel on a shoestring budget? Totally. But by and large, traveling is a luxury. Plan accordingly.

Right then, pictures and stories to follow once I'm caught up and unpacked!

    Anywho!

HA! The border patrol are not people who appreciate humor. Way back when I visited they asked where I was from. I simply said Virginia and hot a snippy reply that it was a "big state ma'am". I'm sorry I didn't figure anyone would know where Midlothian Virginia was.

I decided after our first trip to NYC that I dared anyone to tell me how expensive Disney is!!

Oh, I don't know. Sometimes they do. When I travelled to Montreal by car many years ago, at the border stop on I-87/Autoroute 15, I was asked by the Canadian immigration guy on duty where I was born. After I replied "Cleveland", he offered his sympathy.

    I about cracked up. :laughhard:

Tom :)macwave:... in every country, they have one city they make fun of. In Canada, they make fun of Cleveland.)

The last time I was in Canada was 1988. The border guard asked me if I was leaving anything in Canada. My response was yes "My Father's Ashes". I don't remember what his comment was.

When we're in Canada, we're going over the border to America for the day - wonder how easy that'll be. Only ever done border control at an airport.
