I've just measured our 2 suitcases and the dimensions, on each, add up to an inch or so more than they should. :frown:
Mine was brand new this year, I even checked the label that said it was the correct size before I bought it. :hopmad:
    I'm so annoyed. :hissyfit:

To be honest, I think ours are the same but we've used them 3 or 4 times a year without any problem at all! I think they go off weight much more than size unless they're grotesquely large!

Ah, that's good to hear. They're only over by small amount. In fact the label that's on my new one says it's smaller than I measured it as. We can only take one each as DH has to carry/lift both of them.

Diane, I'm not sure if the luggage manufacturers include the wheels and handles when measuring the cases. The airlines do. :sigh:

Wish everybody would get on the same page with this!

I agree, Taja, especially since it's the traveler, not the luggage manufacturer, who'll have to pay the over-limit fees if the measurements aren't accurate...sheesh!

Thanks for that tip. When I measured, I did take it over the handles and wheels to get the maximum size. That's obviously why my measurements were different to the manufacturer's label.

Mine are slightly over too and have used them several times. I actually spoke to someone in special assistance a few years ago, just afterI had bought some ones as I was worried. She told me to take them back and get a refund and just to worry about the weight. A few inches over the three dimensions would not be recognisable.

I'm going by the weight of our sitcases not by size Diane.

    Thanks for the replies.

Another question - do you think weighing the full suitcase on the bathroom scales will be accurate enough?

Size will drive you batty if you let it. I bought a carry on wheeled case specifically because it was advertized as small enough to carry into the body of the plane and fit in the overhead or under the seat.

Well no it doesn't. :sigh: Not on all planes. I've had to have it valet checked more times than not, so I simply check it through now. Defeated the whole purpose of having my luggage with me so I wouldn't have to wait around for checked baggage. :(

Me too! I also bought one like that before one trip and they had to store it for me in a locker in the galley.

    me three :(

Indeed on the upper deck of the 747s we tend to get across the Atlantic, there is often very limited space indeed in the smaller than normal overheads. So on there unless your carry on is really small you'll have to get it stowed in a locker somewhere.

I have recently bought a set of scales to get an accurate weight...just in case. [Please excuse the pun!] They are hand held and have a hook at one end to attach to your luggage.
Before that I did as you suggest using the bathroom scales. To get a more accurate reading though I weighed myself first, and then again with me holding my case. Subtracting the two weights gives a more accurate reading than just plonking your case on the scales, especially if your scales have designated footprint areas like ours.
