   Let's see if we make it through the first attempt, eh? If so, I'll bring it to you in August and you can wear it home under your shirt like an expectant mum

    Step 2: Buy More Stuff
Because you can never have too much "stuff" right?

    IMG_3150.jpg

Purchased today: glue, fittings, and a 3 1/2 inch hole saw.

What? The instructions called for a 3 1/4 inch hole saw, you say? Well yes it did, but Jon felt like that was too small and thought the 3 1/2 would be better (we'll chat more about this later).

Step 3: Reinforcements for the Crafter!
Jon hates that I'm calling him a "crafter." He says he feels like he should be hot gluing doilies and punching out shapes with a Cricut. I pointed out that the fact that he even KNOWS what Cricut is means he's a "crafter". We've agreed to disagree.

Entenmann's Lemon Pound Cake. This started out as a full loaf. Crafting is hard work.

    IMG_3151.jpg

Step 4: Measure Once, Cut Once.
    Wait, What?

Luckily, there was a slight seam around the center of the globe, and the smallest pinpoint at the absolute middle. From there, we measured down 4 inches. This is where we would drill our lead holes.

    IMG_3153.jpg

    Step 5: Hold Your Breath.
This is where it gets real.

    IMG_3155.jpg

Drill at the ready, prepare to begin sawing (drilling? cutting?) Whatever. Make a hole, people!

Step 6: Exhale. Admire your hole.
Unless you've shattered it. In which case, grab your keys and your credit card, you're headed back to the Depot.

    IMG_3157.jpg

Step 7: Glue the Ear Globe On.
What? The hole is too big?? How did that happen?? I followed the directions exac...oh, wait. Never mind, it'll work.

We applied the glue to the base ledge of the smaller globe and then slipped it into the "head". The 3.5 was, shall we say, roomy...but worked. I think the 3 1/4 would have been a better fit, but no big deal. We then bungy-d the ear to the head to allow it to dry.

    Next step...EAR #2!

    Step 8: Ear #2
What the directions DON'T tell you!

Interestingly enough, NONE of the directions tell you how to bungee the SECOND ear to the head - so we improvised. Blue painters tape! Easy on, easy off - and holds securely.

It's starting to take shape now!

OOOH!! Thank you so much for asking!

    Wellllllllllllllllll...

    Step 9: Wiring the Lights
AKA Finding a Needle in a Haystack

So, apparently THIS is the hardest thing in the WORLD to find. Especially if you a) have no idea what it's called b) have no idea what it's ACTUALLY used for and c) are at Home Depot and dealing with idiots.

    -2.jpg

SO! We went to Lowe's armed with a photo on my phone and......still no luck. (Really?!)

Well, that brought the whole project to a GIANT stand still. Until Sunday, when Jon woke up muttering to himself. Turns out he'd realized where he'd seen this stuff before - soooooo back off to Lowe's we go. For future reference, "this stuff" is PVC pipe strapping. And once we knew what it was, we had no trouble finding it!

    Step 10: Wiring
Or, time for Becca to have a glass of wine.

    -3.jpg

Yeah. Sorry. I may have faded in and out on this one as I was a bit bored because it involved neither a) power tools or b) anything Mickey shaped. So I enjoyed a glass of Shiraz while Jon muttered some more, stripped some wires, plugged in some small bulbs and one big bulb (the strapping is to hold the small bulbs in place in the "ears") and then.....

    Step 11: IT'S ALLLLIVVVVVVVVVVVVEEE!!!
    Get the ticker-tape ready!

    -1.jpg

It turns on!! It actually turns on!

Next up - positioning the lights "just so", spray painting the existing lamp pole and then attaching the Mickey head!!!

Stay tuned for our final installment!

    Soooooo...anybody remember THIS thread??

Well GUESS what happened after spending only a year in the project closet?

JON INSTALLED MY LAMP!!! :mental: :mental:

Just at dusk (shooting away from the house):

One more, different angle (towards the house) after it got a bit darker...

    photo(2).JPG

We've decided we are going to purchase (or paint) some yellow planters for around the base and fill them with red flowers of some sort :)

I'll try and snap a photo of the finished project then!
