On April 7th, 2009, Animal Kingdom began offering a new dining option called "Picnic in the Park." Guests who choose "Picnic in the Park" will be able to purchase a meal for the family packaged in an "Every Tree Has Character" reusable bag. This meal can then be taken to one of any number of picnic spots throughout the park. Your "Picnic" includes plates, utensils, a choice of entrees, side dishes, desserts, and water.

Pricing and selection are separated into two tiers:

Tier 1 features a choice between a chicken wrap, ham grinder, tuna pita, or turkey focaccia sandwich, with pricing starting at $24.99 plus tax for a meal for three.

    Meal for Three – $24.99 + tax
3 Sandwiches, 1 Large Gourmet Side, 3 Desserts or Fruit, 3 bottles of Dasani water

    Meal for Four – $32.99 + tax
4 Sandwiches, 2 Large Gourmet Sides, 4 Desserts or Fruit, 4 bottles of Dasani water

    Meal for Five – $40.99 + tax
5 Sandwiches, 3 Large Gourmet Sides, 5 Desserts or Fruit, 5 bottles of Dasani water

    Meal for Six – $48.99 + tax
6 Sandwiches, 4 Large Gourmet Sides, 6 Desserts or Fruit, 6 bottles of Dasani water

Tier 2 offers a choice between rotisserie chicken or ham, with pricing starting at $29.99 plus tax for a meal for three.

    Meal for Three – $29.99 + tax
6 Pieces of Rotisserie Chicken or 1 lb. of Ham, 2 Large Gourmet Sides, 3 Desserts or Fruit, 3 bottles of Dasani water

    Meal for Four – $38.99 + tax
8 Pieces of Rotisserie Chicken or 1 1/4 lb. of Ham, 3 Large Gourmet Sides, 4 Desserts or Fruit, 4 bottles of Dasani water

    Meal for Five – $47.99 + tax
10 Pieces of Rotisserie Chicken or 1 1/2 lb. of Ham, 4 Large Gourmet Sides, 5 Desserts or Fruit, 5 bottles of Dasani water

    Meal for Six – $56.99 + tax
12 Pieces of Rotisserie Chicken or 1 3/4 lb. of Ham, 5 Large Gourmet Sides, 6 Desserts or Fruit, 6 bottles of Dasani water

    Gourmet Sides (16 oz.)
    • Chips
    • Mac & Cheese
    • Fruit Salad
    • Coleslaw
    • Mashed Potatoes and Gravy
    • Tomato and Cucumber
    • Corn Medley
    • Orzo Pasta Salad
    • Green Beans
    • Oven Roasted Potato Wedges

    Desserts
    • Apple
    • Brownie
    • Cookie
    • Cornbread
    • Crisped Rice Treat
    • Orange

Please note: No modifications or substitutions are allowed.

Guests with food allergies should alert the Cast Member when placing their order, who will then contact a chef.

You may place your order at the "Picnic in the Park" podium located in front of Guest Relations at Animal Kingdom, between 8:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. daily. After that time, or if you decide to get a picnic pack after you're in the park, go directly to the podium at Tusker House Restaurant to place the order.

Pick-up time needs to be at least two hours from the time the order is placed, and you'll need to bring the copy of the order form as confirmation. The pick-up location is at Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery.

Payment is due upon pick-up of the order. If you're on the Disney Dining Plan, Picnic in the Park may be used as a Quick Service Meal (requires one adult entitlement per meal amount). For example, a meal for three will require three adult entitlements.

Seems like a nice alternative to the "typical fare" in Animal Kingdom!

Gourmet mac and cheese? Okay.

So, just to be certain I understand, the price for cash is as posted, but if one is going to use the DP it will take one counter service credit per person?

If that is the case, wouldn't it be cheaper to use cash?

I get so confused with the DP. (One of the reasons I avoid it). :sigh:

Does sound nice though. We've never been too thrilled with the dining options in AK, so it's one of the places we used to bring our own picnic lunch to.

Tink, I think you're spot on in your analysis (unless of course, you're visiting during one of the times when the dining plan is being offered for free. :) )

I like the concept...like you I'm not too sure about their "gourmet" sides...gourmet CHIPS? REALLY? :unimpressed:

But I think it would be something we would try!

Sounds really nice and I would definitely give it a go - hope there will be nice 'picnic spots' to sit and eat though other than a bench on the side of the path or the floor

The thing that gets me about this is that you can't arrange a picnic for less than 3! DH and I would love to do this, but we are only 2!

Indeed, definitely seems to leave out the couples doesn't it? The menu also doesn't accommodate those guests who are vegetarians or vegans, I notice.

    Ok, a bit more information:

The "Picnic Locations" are as follows (these areas are marked on the Picnic in the Park Guide Map you receive with your meal):

    Discovery Island

    • Near Discovery Island Trails
    • Behind Pizzafari

    Camp Minnie Mickey

    • Two locations near Campfire Treats

    Africa
    • Dawa Bar
    • Behind Tusker House Restaurant
    • Near Harambe Fruit Market
    • Near Bradley Falls
    • Tamu Tamu Courtyard

    Rafiki’s Planet Watch

    • Near Conservation Station
    • Asia
    • Across from Flights of Wonder
    • Across from Maharajah Jungle Trek
    • Near Anandapur Ice Cream Truck
    • Near Discovery River
    • DinoLand U.S.A
    • Across from Triceratop Spin

A few photos (sorry for the size, but perhaps they'll give a general idea):

FYI, the reusable bags are available separately for purchase in most of the shops for $2.95 (they are ADORABLE!)

Jax, if you have transport there is a Publix very near AK. :D They do wonderful submarine or wrap sandwiches, plus chips, plus drink for under $10 per person. :D Yes, you can bring them into the park. :D You can also purchase ready made single service desserts, boiled eggs, pickles (the big deli style ones) and things like that.

We don't usually purchase the drink from Publix, but often used to get the sandwiches. We don't know as we no longer "eat that way" but really enjoyed it when we did.

    Just sayin'. :D

There is a lot of choice for places to eat the picnic....but I wonder if they are going to get full of weary park goers wanting a rest.
Do you think you would need proof of picnic to enter?

I don't see how they could do that Isafari (require "proof of picnic") because nearly all the restaurants at AK are counter service and you can take that food anywhere to eat.

Sounds like a good idea.... not for my trip though! Im going in June and I look for an air-conditioned place to eat...just too cool off! Also I heard that if you are using the DP (which we are) and get a meal that feeds 5 then you have to have 5 adult meal credit and 3 of mine are kids. Anyone else hear of this???? I might just be confused:(
