    Instead of going to WDW this Aug, I decided we'd stay close by and go to the beach. Virginia Beach is less than 100 miles away so it's good. We go there pretty frequently so I know there is lots to do. I thought we'd go over Labor Day weekend. Do you know it seems to be cheaper to go to WDW for a week than to the beach for a 4 day weekend????

    I then started looking at Ocean City, MD b/c they are advertising that we need to see their part of the ocean since it will be all gone in a million years :lol: Just as expensive!

    Argh.....

    And I have no desire to go to any of the beaches in North Carolina b/c everyone from here goes there. Also, they don't have a lot to do and I could handle that for about a day.....

    I'm still working on this trip......but I can't find a deal at all!

    Isn't that amazing? We've looked into beach stays too, and they are pretty expensive. What's up with that? It used to be one of the most inexpensive vacations. :sigh;

    You know? I know it would mean airfare, but there are still some wonderful places on the coast in Maine. :yes:

    I have never been to Maine. I think we're going to stay within driving distance though.

    I would love to go visit the coast of Maine, maybe scoop out a possible future house. :D

    We used to go to VA beach when we lived there, my dad was stationed at the local base. I was little, but remember coming back home with sand in my swimsuit, still not sure how that happens. :lol:

    foreverducky (and Johnie! It's really not that far to drive) if you want to visit the Maine coast don't stop until you hit Portland. :yes: North of Portland is where the real Maine seacoast starts. I love Belfast. It's a beautiful little town. My old hometown of Rockland is nice too, and has a true working port. It's the sight of the Maine Lobster Festival (August) too. :yes:

    If you ever do get to Portland, be sure to have breakfast at Becky's down on Commercial. It's right near the commercial section and Old Port. She's an incredible woman, that Becky. :yes:

    DizneyBlonde, you are so very lucky! I love the sea and miss living by it very much! You are also incredibly brave! We could all herd to your home one of these summers! :D

    Jon and I are thinking of taking a trip up to Maine in August and camping...Johnie, you should come along with us!! You don't have to camp, you could just do the beach bit :D Jon's aunt lives not far from Portland, so we've only ever been as far as her house, I'm looking forward to exploring a bit further!

    Did you decide where you are going to camp? I've been camping there (although must admit, it's NOT my favorite thing to do) Barcadia if you can believe it! :lol: Not a bad place at all though. Definitely above Portland.

    There's this lovely little place just above Rockland in Glen Cove. It's on the right as you are headed North. For the life of me I can't remember the name, but it's a glorious spot. Hasn't been improved since the fifties. Has wicked little cottages, and then efficiency style set ups, and motel rooms. Not sure about bona fide camping though. It's on it's own cove with a shingle beach and those wonderful huge rocks that you can clamber all over. The trawlers come into the cove in the morning. It's one of those places where you sit on the rocks with your morning beverage of choice and just listen, watch and breathe. I'll check on the name of it when I get home. I have a postcard from there... darn! Wish I had a memory! :sigh;

    All that to say, have fun! Be sure to eat loads of lobster and clams. :yes:

    If pushed, I'd have to say it's probably NOT my favorite thing to do either, but I'm open to the idea....and Jon really seems excited about it...We haven't decided on any campsite for certain since we don't know the area well, so I will absolutely take your ideas and run with them!! I like the idea of a cottage, wonder if I can convince Jon that's as good as camping...Your description of it sounds...PERFECT...exactly what were looking for...you paint such a peaceful picture...

    I am DEFINITELY looking forward to some good seafood!!!! I have to say, if there is ANYTHING about my new area that disappoints me, it's the lack of fresh seafood in our immediate area...I guess somehow I just assumed we'd be able to buy it on the street corner more or less...I guess I need to wade a bit further into the New England area for that though :D
