Recommendations for a place to stay

Next summer (2015) we will be going to Disney with our next set of grandchildren. In the past we've had 2 girls, 2 girls, 2 boys and our daughter and we were able to stay at one of the All Stars. This time however, we will have a 9 year old girl, a 9 year old boy and a 17 year old boy. Obviously the big guy is going to want his own bed and the two 9 year olds can't very well sleep in the same bed. We are considering AoA suites but I'm not even sure that would work. Another option is renting a DVC by buying someone's points. If we chose to go that route which DVC resort should we try for (Personally I would like OKW) and what type of unit should we request?

Nope. That wouldn't ever work, at least not in our family. A 17 year old and 9 year old would be fighting it out all night. Plus the 9 year old girl would have to be in with the boys.

All in personal taste, of course but looks like you'll need a two bedroom where the boys get the bedroom and the girl gets the pull out in the living room. Oh, and I'm talking about OKW in this respect.

 

Have you looked into the cabins at Ft. Wilderness? They have a beds, bunkbeds and a murphy bed. Or possibly 2 connecting rooms at a value/mod?

 

I think, given the dynamics, I would choose Beach Club/Boardwalk. Both are within walking distance to two parks (MGM especially given their ages). Would the 17 year old boy share a bed with the 9 year old boy? If so, you could do a Studio, but a 1 Bedroom might be better - either way if none of the kids are willing to sleep w/ one another, you'll need to bring an air mattress or bedding of some sort.

OKW (1 bedroom) is also a good option as they'll have the bed, the pullout sofa and most likely a pullout chair.

Points-wise, OKW and Boardwalk are going to be the same, with Beach Club being a bit more.

Comparing them to AoA suites...a quick price comparison shows a price of $377 for 1 night at AoA whereas renting points for a night at say, Boardwalk or OKW would cost somewhere between $390 and $420 (depending on how much you paid per point).

 

Just to keep up comparisons, a 2 bedroom at OKW would run you between $520 and $560/night (approximately) to rent points.

 

Would you consider connecting rooms, the girl could sleep in the room with you and Donna and the 17 and 9 year old boys could sleep in the other room. I would think this might be cheaper than an apartment depending upon where you stay.

 

And everyone would have a bed! At about $153/night x 2 (for connecting rooms) that would be the least expensive option, as Wendy said.

Secrets Meet in the Treehouses!?

 

I am ashamed to say I have no idea what you are talking about

 

Don't be ashamed! I had no idea they existed until a couple of years ago when we floated by one on our way from POR to Downtown Disney! They are part of Saratoga Springs DVC, and are, quite literally, Treehouses! They look amazing!

 

Hahaha! By your standards, I'm guessing NOT! There is definitely no movie room but then again it's a TREEHOUSE. And that's kinda cool.

Far too many steps for me

 

The treehouses are cool but they are expensive

 

Wendy, they've been there for years and years. They were shut down for a number of years, too. They were run down and not nice at all. (Back in the days of Disney Institute being on the land that is now SSR). They rebuilt them all, and now they are back to being available. The area is quite nice, a touch like Fort Wilderness but only a fraction of the size (1/100th or so).

They sleep 9 if I remember correctly, so it's hard for us to get up a group big enough to stay. They are WICKED hard to book, too. Very popular.

Anyway, it was a bit tongue in cheek, suggesting it to John, but it would certainly be fun!

I do think though, to be serious and for the most part, two connecting rooms at a value resort might be the best bet.

 

Last month, one of the DVC rental brokers I ran across had a "last minute deal" on one of the treehouses for a week. An entire week for $1600 for up to nine people! I so wished I could just pick up and go with 8 of my closest friends!!
