Insurance is an absolute essential, especially when travelling to the States.

I'm guessing that you are from the US pixeemom in which case travel insurance is a whole different debate. It is essential when travelling from the UK to cover any unforeseen medical care needed as our insurance- the NHS won't cover us there or repatriation to the UK . It also covers us for other stuff like baggage going missing etc etc. I'm guessing that's the kind of insurance you're talking about :)

We always use it when going on a cruise as the medical expenses would be crazy if for some reason you would need it. Also the boat doesn't wait for you if there is transportation issues getting there. We don't use it however when going to WDW.

Luckily we have travel insurance which is provided by one of my credit cards and the cost is included with the annual cost of the card.
I say "luckily" because a few years ago I had to have some dental treatment when we were in Orlando and the bill came to around $ 1,300 !!!

I made a claim when I returned home to the UK and was reimbursed very soon after. :wiggle:

We don't use it when traveling within the US. When traveling outside the US, we always have it.

From the UK yes yes and yes.

Last year my DD had her appendix nearly burst at 3am on the third day of our holiday. Never say never.

I have an annual policy that I renew every year, pretty much if I'm planning on travelling or not - you never know when you've got to make a trip at short notice and it's always on those types of trips things tend to go wrong.

Thankfully, I've never had to use it, but it's nice to know it's there.

Also if travelling to Europe from UK don't forget your EHIC card, it's good to have as a standby but still get travel insurance.

My little story... DD and I have the EHIC card but I still purchased the travel insurance as EHIC doesn't cover you for cancellations etc, but if you only use your EHIC card for any hospitalisation then I say be wary. DD was given the basic ward which was in not a good condition, but as soon as they realised we had insurance the grubby ward miraculously became a spotlessly clean single room en suite!

EHIC gives you the same treatment the locals get which means you STILL have to pay but what the locals would pay.

the travel insurance company would expect you to have the EHIC card and use it as a first point of call too. I don't think they'll pay out if you don't :)
