'You can upgrade when purchasing a full adult published fare in the following booking classes: W, S, Y, B, R, L, U and M.'

Please can anyone tell me what the letters mean when looking at reward fares.

    Thank you.

And that is exactly why I get a travel agent to book my flights. :rotfl:

There are bits of the virgin site that tells you which each code is but basically it means that you cant book the heavily discounted fares and then do a cheapy upgrade. So you'll find those classes listed tend to be more expensive than if you do the "show me cheap economy flights"

I'll leave it there because Wendy is really good at finding reward fares so I think she'll answer better than I

Wendy will explain more but you can scope it out yourself by using the virgin find flight and specifying the classes.... then searching an upgrade flight OR if you call the flying club, you'll get a very helpful person who'll help you find exactly what you're looking for and the cheapest way to get it :)

I normally like to have SOME idea of available dates and prices before I call

Well, it's less straightforward than that. I've heard that you can now use miles to upgrade if booking a package via a travel agent, but only certain classes. As I have no idea what they mean I can't tell if I could use mine. I know, I'm awkward. ;)

I think they use these different codes to confuse people

To answer your question about the codes, the lowest flight cost you can buy if you want a reward flight in economy is M. The prices go up in group all the way to Y which is the most expensive. If you have one of these codes then you can upgrade to the next cabin using miles or make changes to your flight for a fee which I think is £100.

What you would need to do though, is look for fares in PE and see what dates they have available. The reward seats are there but you need to be completely flexible. If you want to go at a busy or popular time of the year, your chances of getting a reward flight is virtually zero.

Go into your Flying Club and then select Cabin Upgrades then check for PE dates making sure you select at the bottom to Spend Miles and write the dates available down.

If there is a date that is acceptable to you then go back to the calendar and look for an M code price, make a note of the price.

    search for flights.JPG

If you have free phone calls, then phone Virgin on 01293 562 345 and ask for the Red Flying Club. The operator will then put you through and you won't be paying for the call.

Explain what you want to do, give them the dates and say that you have just checked online and there is an M class available for £???? and you want to use miles to upgrade to PE and the dates you've given are available online.

You will have to pay a little more than the M class fare as you have to pay the taxes on a PE seat minus the taxes on the E seat.

Hope this explains it a bit more.

I haven't heard of that and there isn't anything in the Flying Club about it

    Thank you, Wendy. :)
I'll check all of that when the flights are available.
I'm dubious about the fact that it can be done through a TA too. :)

You will find that reward flights don't always appear straight away when the flights become available. So all you can do is keep checking as they add more all the time depending on the time of the year.

If you need any help then please just ask :)

I'm not having a go at TAs.... but I'd be very careful on this one. I've had instances where they've come back and said "the very best we can do is xyz" and then I've texted Wendy who's found an upgrade flight for cheaper with no trouble. I've then called virgin myself and got it booked easily

Maybe I should become a VA/Disney travel agent for the UK :D
