A nest again. She started a bit late in thr day so Im guessing she'll abandon it and try again tomorow.

As you can see from the state of the greenhouse cloche, she doesn't make a very nice tortoise when she is gravid :rotfl: She picked the oddest spot to lay in. I assume it was the hottest, but the soil was that hard after digging 1 nest she gave up. I poured hot water on it and turned the soil and then she dug another and eventually laid!!

Thank heaven you were there to help her.

So, in the wild, would she have moved on to try another less hard area of earth, or laid them in a shallow nest?

She would have either persevered with it or gone off to find another spot. The greenhouse cloche is the hottest spot in their enclosure so she would probably have dug somewhere else there.

They sometimes lay loads of 'test' nests before digging another one. After she gave up the first time, I gave her something to eat and she went about her normal business. I gave her a bath to get her going after I'd turned the soil over and she chose to dug in the same-ish spot in the loosened soil.
