We recently had breakfast at the Kona Café (end of August 2008). It was a surprise Birthday Breakfast and had been booked that way. We arrived (myself and the birthday celebrant) by plan, after the other guests in the party had arrived.
The CMs at the podium very graciously accommodated two extra persons in our party and seated us at a nice round table. Unfortunately, that was the end of well trained, personable CMs for quite some time. The server, Joan from Winter Garden must have been having a terrible day; such a bad day that she should have been given the day off by the floor manager. She never once smiled, she spoke in a monotone that was so low she had to be asked to repeat herself more than once, which prompted so much eye rolling, I was certain that my Mother’s proverbial warning as a child was going to come true. Her eyes really were in danger of being stuck that way.
My breakfast, the pulled ham hash and poached eggs was ruined when the salt shaker top malfunctioned and spewed salt all over the dish. I attempted to eat around it, but to no avail. Above and beyond the salt, the ham tasted terrible. Joan from Winter Garden was not pleased when I sent it away and said I didn’t want a replacement. I truly wasn’t that hungry by this point. I shared a bit of the birthday celebrant’s omelette, but was not happy with the burnt eggs that had been creatively folded to the inside. The Birthday Celebrant ate some, but declared herself too excited to finish. (A polite way of saying she didn’t care for it any more than I did).
One in our party was a soon to be two year old, who had ordered the Mickey pancake breakfast. Since when does a Mickey pancake constitute one large cake with two smaller ones tucked under it for the ears? What happened to the single pancake that had the ears poured and cooked so that it made one unit?
The others in our party made no complaint regarding their respective breakfasts, but no one finished their entire meal. The coffee was reportedly, old. I didn’t try it, but the Aunt who is a real coffee drinker made that pronouncement. It is important to note that no one ordered the Tonga Toast.
Joan of Winter Garden appeared with the check (with my breakfast having been removed without asking) sometime after the gifts were opened, and passed around for inspection. As she moved away from the table, I followed and asked about the special order cake that was supposed to be delivered to the table after breakfast. She curtly told me she didn’t know anything about it and began to move off again. I asked to whom I should speak and was directed by a hand toss to the floor manager.
The floor manager restored my waning faith in Kona Café’s CMs! She and her colleague were wonderful. They found the cake, had it delivered with a bit of fanfare to the table, and had her colleague cut and serve it. He also gave us some extra paper plates and plastic table ware to take with us for the (substantial amount) leftover cake.
The cake was delicious. It was a chocolate layer cake with raspberry mouse filling and chocolate butter cream frosting. The decoration on the cake was a bit disappointing as they had used a yellow (clear) writing frosting that didn’t stand out against the chocolate frosting. The roses that I ordered for the cake consisted of one rose. No matter, the Birthday Celebrant and everyone else really loved the cake. Good job of that since we were all still a bit hungry after the breakfast!
We’ll not be rushing back to the Kona Café any time soon. Where we had once loved to breakfast there, we were disappointed in the quality of the food.
If I were to special order a cake from WDW again, I would be much more specific in my instructions instead of assuming that the decorator would do a wonderful job, jsolely because of working at WDW.
All in all, the birthday was not ruined by any means, but the Kona breakfast fell flat and gave us a less than stellar start to what went on to be a wonderful stay at the Polynesian Resort.

I waited about 15 minutes from the time I was seated until the server came to begin my breakfast service. This was well after the morning rush and the restaurant was not busy at all.
The food was very good, with the exception of "Disney's signature precooked and paper thin bacon". I would expect better quality from a DDR. I'll get the ham or sausage on my next visit.
