I love this bit "The UK Foreign Office declined to provide any advice to British travellers, referring the Guardian only to its general foreign travel advice page for the US, which contains no information on digital privacy at the border."

    how useless are they!

One of the companies we do work for had their corporate lawyers looking at it and advising their staff and I saw a copy because I'm on their email list. Basically the advice they were giving their people was to ensure no confidential information was carried on any digital device, rather store it on a cloud server somewhere and if challenged, give the passwords willingly. For people who didn't want to do that they were advising leave electronics at home and pick up a pay as you go phone from walmart once over there.
